We have been growing our own tomatoes in a little bit of garden space since 2005 and it was mostly quite successful, depending on the weather.
Sometimes it does rain too much in the summer or the temperature drops too quickly and become really chilly before the beginning of autumn, making our tomato harvest really tiny.
But I should say that when it’s really nice warm and sunny, our tomatoes grow wonderfully fast and harvest’s usually quite good. If this happens, I would be found browsing the web for ideas or recipes to finish up our tomatoes..
We expanded our little veg patch in 2010, and started growing more veg.. So this is a pictorial story of our 2010 Veg Patch and Harvest. We were very happy with this year’s crops. 🙂
2 months after sowing our little plants outdoors, we can really see what we would be getting soon.. L-F: Leeks, Runner Beans and Haricots (at the back) and Carrots (in front), Tomatoes (at the back) and Spring Onions and Aubergine (in front)
At the same time, our courgette plant started flowering.
Rosemary (at the back) and Lemon Thyme (in front) – 2 of my favourites herbs
I found out that Lemon Thyme can’t survive the winter outdoors. I’ll plant my Lemon Thyme in a separate pot in 2011, so that I can bring it indoors when it gets chilly or cold, i.e. in the winter..
4 little Spring Onions which sprouted and provided us with enough food for 6 or so months. Great!!
Tomato plants – half of our seeded crop. We expected a big harvest of tomatoes.
Sad to say, it wasn’t a good harvest this year coz they all just turned brown and died too soon, after several bouts of heavy rain over several weeks.. 🙁
Back L-R: Yellow Paprika – lots of flowers but only 1 paprika harvested; just some nice red flowering plants
Front L-R: Chives, 2 Red Chilli plants – also lots of flowers and gave us abt 8 red chillies and 2 green ones, Red Paprika – only 2 Paprikas harvested
Runner beans (snijbonen) – love these and happy that we had quite a lot of them.. 🙂
My chillies – still green but they turned red after some weeks.. 🙂
My baby paprikas – they turned red after several months but not much bigger in size tho.. 😀
Harvested some runner beans and just 1 sprig (?) of spring onions for dinner..
Some of our last harvest for the year.. Did you see that 1 strange carrot? 🙂
Some time in October 2010, we cleared our veg patch. It got too cold for anything to grow properly.. 🙁
